Why is it called Norra Djurgårdsstaden?
The name came into use in 2006, when it described planned housing in the western part of Hjorthagen, up against the boundary of the Norra Djurgården district. That boundary is what the name refers to.
Which is also where an easy misreading starts: despite the name, none of the development area falls inside the Norra Djurgården district itself. It sits across two other districts instead, Hjorthagen and Gärdet.

What is the difference between Hjorthagen and Norra Djurgårdsstaden?
Hjorthagen is a district in its own right, with housing and a history that both predate the development project. Norra Djurgårdsstaden is not a district at all — it is the name of the development area, and it reaches across two districts, Hjorthagen and Gärdet.
So an address in old Hjorthagen can correctly be given either way, depending on whether you mean the district or the project. Both sit within the Norra innerstaden district area.

What is it like to live in Norra Djurgårdsstaden?
The City of Stockholm has surveyed residents since 2016. In the most recent round, in 2023, eight in ten said they were very satisfied and nine in ten said they felt safe in the area. It went to 900 residents here, and the same questions were put to people living in the older buildings on Gärdet and in Hjorthagen — 700 answers came back in all.
What people single out is the parks and green space, the squares and places to meet outdoors, and services that have improved as the district fills in. The share who find the area lively rose from just over four in ten in 2019 to just over six in ten in 2023.
