Norra Djurgårdsstaden is one of Europe's largest urban development areas: 236 hectares where 12,000 homes and 35,000 workplaces are being built into the 2030s. This page covers what is under construction now, which phases lie ahead, and which of Gasverket's industrial buildings have already reopened with a new use.

The 1905 purification house has been rebuilt as offices, and in autumn 2026 the Royal Swedish Opera takes the premises over from Sandvik, who moved in as the first tenant in 2020. The building was designed by Hjalmar Westlund, and the conversion was not allowed to show in the facade: steel window frames, cast-iron roof trusses and an overhead crane are preserved and reused.
Ferdinand Boberg’s 1899 gasholder becomes the culture and events venue Gasometer. Because the building carries Stockholm’s strongest heritage classification, the stage is built as a free-standing house inside the old brick shell — 25 metres high and 40 metres wide, designed by Jan Izikowitz at Tengbom. Eleven floors, eight of them public, and 1,560 seats. The city owns the building, Miramis runs the venue, and the Royal Swedish Opera is the first tenant, using Gasometer as its main stage from 2027 to 2030.
The smaller of Gasverket’s two brick gasholders is being converted into a hotel, work that started in autumn 2024. Gasklocka 1 belongs to the gasworks’ first construction stage and went into service in autumn 1893. It is a wet-seal holder, where the gas was enclosed in a vessel with a water seal, and one of the buildings on the site best preserved from its own era.
Two small parks in old Hjorthagen are being upgraded during 2026, following a citizen’s proposal and a consultation with older residents of the district. Kolarlunden, at the corner of Kolargatan and Artemisgatan, gets a boules court, renewed paths and seating, and mown lawn is gradually being turned into meadow. The park in the Hagelbössan block is renewed in the autumn with a new path, lighting, seating and a frame of shrubs and trees.
The spherical high-pressure holder from the 1970s is planned to be rebuilt as offices. The shape was typical of its time and common worldwide, and it differs completely from the two brick gasholders next to it. No timetable for the conversion has been published.
An existing rock cavern in Hjorthagsberget is to be rebuilt as a car park with up to 1,000 spaces, mainly for residents and businesses in Gasverket, Kolkajen and Ropsten. The point is to meet the parking need without putting more cars on the streets. The detailed plan came into force on 18 November 2018; Stockholm Parkering will own, build and operate the garage. No construction start date has been published.
